Career Counseling

Are You Seeking More Passion and Success in Your Career?

Have increased stress, conflicts at work or professional obligations left you feeling dissatisfied or burnt out? Are you pouring time and energy into work that no longer has meaning for you and leaves you feeling unfulfilled? Or, do the costs of paying off student loans or raising a family in New York City have you feeling trapped in an unsatisfying but high-paying or stable career? You might feel stuck in your career and want to make a change, but you don’t feel satisfied or empowered in your industry or work environment. You may have taken on a new position or leadership responsibilities that have you feeling unprepared or like an imposter. Perhaps you are having difficulty delegating responsibility and managing interpersonal office conflicts in ways that creates opportunity and growth rather than breakdowns in work relationships. Or, maybe you are transitioning from a paid position to being self-employed and wonder how the transition or change in finances will impact your partner or children. Do you want to move from a life of success to one of significance?

You may be in a position in which your company is downsizing and you need to find another job quickly. But, despite your professional successes, you may not feel confident in your ability to navigate the job market, engage in the interviewing process and find a position that fits your interests and needs. You might want to move to a new industry or a position that offers greater flexibility so you can have more work-life balance and joy in your life. But, you might question if you are taking too big of a risk in making a change or wonder if your dreams are just too big. Maybe you aren’t sure what type of work you would find fulfilling and need help identifying and narrowing career options. Do you wish you could feel less stressed and more satisfied and confident in yourself, your decisions and the trajectory of your career?

Many People Struggle to Navigate the Work Environment

While our education and professional training provide the information we need to understand our field, few of us are ever taught how to navigate the work environment. Every company and organization is unique, and we don’t always know the unwritten rules for how to manage conflict or build relationships at work. You may want to discuss career challenges, develop new skills or change industries, but these possibilities can feel difficult to navigate, and you may not know who you can trust to offer neutral, non-judgmental guidance and support. And in a fast-paced city like NYC, you might not feel like you can afford to make a change or step back to focus on your own professional needs.

The good news is that you don’t have to navigate the stresses, uncertainties and possibilities of your work life alone. An experienced and skilled career coach in New York City can provide you with the resources, skills and practical strategies you need to find and foster a career that matches your values, skills and interests.

Gain Resources, Tools and Support with Career Counseling

A career counselor can help you understand what you want and need to feel engaged and fulfilled at work. I offer a safe space where you can explore your ideal career, set goals and take practical steps toward creating a more satisfying and balanced professional life. You can address negative self-beliefs, patterns of behavior and interpersonal relationships that are impacting your perspective or sense of satisfaction at work. Whether you are trying to develop specific career skills or you need help identifying career options and feeling empowered to make a change, there are steps you can take to feel more empowered and fulfilled in the workplace.

Throughout our career-focused work together, I incorporate tools, techniques and strategies tailored to your unique career goals and needs. You will begin by taking career assessments as a way to help look at your work preferences and leadership style. We will work collaboratively to identify career options that match your interests and explore the kind of work environments that are best suited to you. We might discover that you don’t need to change positions or industries to feel happy and satisfied in your career. Rather, it might be that we need to explore the dynamics of your work environment and come up with practical steps you can take to feel empowered in your position and get financial, interpersonal and other important work-related needs met. Instead of focusing on obstacles, setbacks or performance difficulties, you can become more aware of your own strengths and develop the skills and confidence you need to better cope with stress, manage conflict and more effectively communicate in the workplace. You can begin thriving instead of just surviving.

I have been working with women from all walks of life and ethnic backgrounds for 20 years, and I am committed to helping other women foster a sense of confidence and satisfaction in their lives and careers. In addition to my work as a therapist and coach, I have worked with executives, managers and staff at all levels as an Employee Assistance Provider providing training to help individuals recognize and share their needs in the workplace. With the guidance and support of a career counselor and stress management coach, you can build the confidence and skills you need to feel engaged, inspired and successful in your work.

But, you may still have questions or concerns about working with a career counselor…

I don’t have time to meet with a career coach.

You may not feel like you have time to add anything else to your already busy schedule. But, consider how much time you spend every week dreading your job or procrastinating because you can’t or don’t want to focus on your work. Rather than spend your time worried, stressed or frustrated about work, you can re-delegate that time into identifying and addressing your career goals and creating a fulfilling professional life that you can be excited about.

I’m not sure I can afford career counseling.

It can be stressful budgeting in another expense, especially if you are dealing with a career change or potential job loss that will impact your finances. However, career coaching can be a vital investment into your immediate and long-term career and financial success and satisfaction. Together, we can identify career goals, address obstacles that are affecting your productivity and develop strategies that support your growth and potential so you can reach your optimal level at work.

I already spend too much time at work. I don’t want to spend more time talking about it.

We will do more than just talk about your career challenges and stressors during sessions. I take an active, engaging approach to career coaching for women, helping you understand what it is you need to feel inspired and energized in your work. I can help you define your career goals and take practical steps to foster greater satisfaction and balance in your life and career.

Testimonials

  • Dr. Brathwaite has facilitated a retreat for women leaders at our church over the last three years.. A community of faith faces the same challenges as many secular organizations however there are greater sensitivities. Dr. Brathwaite has been able to provide guidance to our board so that we are respectful to church traditions’ but free to explore how we can better serve the community outside of our church doors; adhering to our mission.

We have experienced breakthroughs, increased sisterhood, and better participation as a whole as a result of her work. Dr. Brathwaite is perceptive, open to ideas, and overall made our sisters eager to explore further how we may work better together. She helped make our workshop subjects light and easy to tackle. Our progress will continue as she is joining us for a fourth year.
